Phytoplankton influences on tropical climate

چکیده
[1] We study the effect of ocean biology on tropical surface temperatures using a simplified coupled atmosphere-ocean model. It is shown that moderate phytoplankton blooms, occuring e.g. during La Niña conditions, lead to a vertical redistribution of heat in the surface layers and an associated surface layer warming of about 20 W/m. The positive airsea coupling in the eastern equatorial Pacific plays an important role in amplyfying this signal, thereby damping La Niña conditions. This temperature-regulating feedback acts as a biological thermostat within the surface ocean and influences also the amplitude and asymmetry of the El NiñoSouthern Oscillation.

Climate Impact on Phytoplankton Blooms in Shallow Lakes Data-Based Model Approaches and Model-Guided Data Analyses
Lake ecosystems across the globe have responded to climate warming of recent decades and are expected to further change in the future. Anticipating impacts that are detrimental to water quality is critically important given that lakes constitute a major part of the earth’s freshwater resources. A central concern is the climate impact on phytoplankton, including algae and cyanobacteria, since it...
متن کاملA glimpse into the future composition of marine phytoplankton communities
*Correspondence: Esteban Acevedo-Trejos, Systems Ecology Group, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology, Fahrenheitstrasse 6, 28359 Bremen, Germany e-mail: esteban.acevedo@ zmt-bremen.de It is expected that climate change will have significant impacts on ecosystems. Most model projections agree that the ocean will experience stronger stratification and less nutrient supply from deep waters. ...
متن کاملGlobal latitudinal variations in marine copepod diversity and environmental factors.
Latitudinal gradients in diversity are among the most striking features in ecology. For terrestrial species, climate (i.e. temperature and precipitation) is believed to exert a strong influence on the geographical distributions of diversity through its effects on energy availability. Here, we provide the first global description of geographical variation in the diversity of marine copepods, a k...
متن کاملDecadal-Scale Climate and Ecosystem Interactions in the North Pacific Ocean
Decadal-scale climate variations in the Pacific Ocean wield a strong influence on the oceanic ecosystem. Two dominant patterns of large-scale SST variability and one dominant pattern of large-scale thermocline variability can be explained as a forced oceanic response to large-scale changes in the Aleutian Low. The physical mechanisms that generate this decadal variability are still unclear, but...
متن کاملAtmospheric response to solar radiation absorbed by phytoplankton
[1] Phytoplankton alter the absorption of solar radiation, affecting upper ocean temperature and circulation. These changes, in turn, influence the atmosphere through modification of the sea surface temperature (SST). To investigate the effects of the present-day phytoplankton concentration on the atmosphere, an atmospheric general circulation model was forced by SST changes due to phytoplankto...
